Mpumalanga: take 2

This past Holy Weekend I went camping with several others from the Johannesburg metro area to Mpumalanga again to do alot of hiking and adventuring. Day 1 consisted of a 3km hike in which we had a braai to end the evening. Day 2 was a 13 km hike to the next hut. We went up and down through valleys and crossed stream upon stream. It was a pretty cool hike with plenty of great views. Day 3 was Easter Sunday. The trip organizers decided that this day would be a day of rest and relaxation which was a great call. We did some free climbing on massive boulders that were everywhere and went cliff jumping at some waterfalls nearby.

On day 4 we woke up to some pretty hardcore rains. It was
one of those days you wish you could sleep in about 5 more hours. But it was our last day there and the hike our to the cars was about another 14 km. We started out in light rain that picked up and then became lighter and then picked up and then faded out eventually. The thing was that because of the previous night's rain much of the water crossings had been washed out or were under about 4-6 feet of water. Needless to say we were up to our waists and higher at times sending packs across the rivers.

We made it out around 2pm on Monday to Bourke's Luck potholes which were pretty cool to see. Huge waterfalls have carved out circular holes in the rocks. We also hike out to get one last view of the Blyde River Canyon (lowest picture) that was pretty breathtaking. God's glory was in pretty fine display this weekend as most of South Africa is transitioning in to fall and colder temperatures.
